President Buhari appoints Mohammed Kari as NAICOM boss

President Buhari has appointed Alhaji Mohammed Kari as the new Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive of the National Insurance Commission, NAICOM. According to a statement released today by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, Mr Kari's appointment, which is for a term of four years, takes effect from today July 31st. Accident claims 10 lives in Ogun

No fewer than 10 persons lost their lives in an accident involving two trucks and two commercial vehicles at Ogunmakin area of Lagos/Ibadan Expressway in Ogun on Friday. Mr Adegoke Adetunji, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, who confirmed the accident, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the two buses rammed into the trucks at about 5a.m. According to him, 10 persons were confirmed dead in the accident. 36,000 Police officers to attend promotion courses in December – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Slomon Arase The Inspector-General of Police (IG-P), Mr Slomon Arase, said in Abuja on Friday that 36,000 police officers would attend promotion courses in December. Arase, who said this during an inspection tour of the FCT Police command, said that 4,000 Inspectors would also attend the board for promotion. He advised the officers against bribing any instructor during the duration of the course as all expenses would be paid by the police authority. “If you go on course do not give any instructor money during the course for whatever reason.  “You know I have zero tolerance for corruption, that is why the roadblocks were removed,’’ he said.  He said that the implementation of the safer highways introduced by his administration was yet to yield the desired results. Police take over Ekiti PDP secretariat

Police on Friday took over the Peoples Democratic Party Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, as crisis rocking the party in the State took a new twist. Armed policemen numbering 50, one Armoured Personnel Carrier and operational vehicles were deployed in the Secretariat to prevent attack from the aggrieved members of the State Working Committee, perceived to be working against the interest of the governor. The State Executive Committee at its meeting presided over by the Acting Chairman, Idowu Faleye, suspended the factional Acting Chairman, Mr. Tunde Olatunde; State Secretary, Tope Aluko; Auditor, Tunji Olanrewaju; Woman Leader, Busola Oyebode and Assistant Secretary, Mr Femi Esan. The SEC at its Friday meeting also set up a seven-member disciplinary committee to try the suspended members for anti-party activities. Another Jos chlorine explosion victim dies

One more victim of the chlorine gas explosion, which occurred at the water treatment plant of the Plateau State Water Board in Jos, has died, bringing the death toll to nine. Eight persons were said to have died and more than 101 others received treatment for reportedly inhaling excessive poisonous gas, when a cylinder, containing chlorine, exploded last Friday night. Our correspondent gathered that the latest victim is 18-year-old Samuel Nwosu. Nwosu, who lived at Millionaire Quarters, just behind the water board premises, was said to have been rushed to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, in Jos. Popular Yoruba actor Ajigijaga dies [ Broken Bottle ]

Popular Yoruba actor, Mufutau Sanni Adio a.k.a Ajigijaga has died.  The famed actor died at his residence at Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos today July 31st following injuries he sustained from a motorcycle (okada) accident two weeks ago.  He was aged 60. Ekiti PDP Suspends Four Executive council Members [ EXCO ]

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, southwest,Nigeria has finally hit the wall as four of its executive members were suspended today. The affected officers are; Dr.Tope Aluko, (State Secretary), Hon.Tunde Olatunde, Hon.Mrs Busola Ayobode (State Women Leader), and Hon. Olanrewaju (State Auditor). This was made known on Thursday in Ado- Ekiti by the publicity secretary of the party in the state. He disclosed that the party has received suspension letters from the various constituencies of the affected officials and the party has constituted a 7 man panel to investigate the matter. FRSC sets September 1 deadline for installing safety valve in tankers

The Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, has warned tanker drivers that any of their vehicles without a safety valve installed in it by September 1, would be grounded. This is just as he said that the drivers of a total number of 414 trucks  had been arrested between Monday, July 27 and Thursday, July 30, 2015, for various offences in an operation tagged “Operation Scorpion”. Three sisters die in Lagos fire

Tragedy struck on Friday morning in the Mechanic Village area of Oke Afa, Isolo, Lagos, when a midnight fire ravaged some shops, burning three sisters to death in the process. Our correspondent learnt that the three sisters of the same family, whose names had yet to be known, were aged 5,7, and 12 years old. It was gathered that their guardian reportedly locked them in a shop before the fire incident. Their corpses were said to have been removed by policemen from the Ejigbo division. Two fire trucks from Isolo and Ikotun branches of the Lagos State Fire Service were seen at the scene to put out the fire. The Director of the service, Dr. Razak Fadipe, who confirmed the incident, said efforts were on to curtail the fire. Details later. European Union bans food exports from Nigeria

The European Union has banned some food exports from Nigeria. Among the food items banned includes beans, sesame seeds, melon seeds, dried fish and meat, peanut chips and palm oil. A statement from the European Food Safety Authority says the food substances were banned because they contained 'a high level of unauthorized pesticide.' On July 4th 2015, a 20-year-old woman delivered a baby boy in Gudun Sayawa area of Bauchi with an apparent birth defect. The baby boy christened Chongfilawos was born without arms or legs. National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APCN Chief John Oyegun and the party’s governors were in a crucial meeting last night. The meeting at Imo governor’s lodge in Asokoro Abuja had in attendance Govs.R ochas Okorocha (Imo), Adams Oshiomole (Edo), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Rauf Arebegsola (Osun) and Kashim Shettima (Borno).
