FG Unreachable Since Last Meeting, Says ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday said it has not heard from the Federal Government following the meeting between the two parties last Thursday.

The union added that it had not back down on the ultimatum it gave the Federal Government.

The PUNCH had reported that ASUU had given the Federal Government an ultimatum following the failure of the government to fulfill some of the agreements it made with the union in 2020.

The Federal Government had promised to pay the N30bn revitalisation fund to universities while also agreeing to release N22.1bn earned allowances to university workers.

The National President of the Union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, had also lamented the pressure placed by the government on members of his union as regards joining the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System.

Following the ultimatum, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila had invited the ASUU President, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed; and Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, among others.

At the end of the last week meeting, the government promised to pay ASUU this week.

But Osodeke told The PUNCH on Tuesday that the Federal

Government had not commenced payment and had not reached out after the meeting.

He said, “Since that meeting, we have not heard from the Federal Government. But our ultimatum still stands. We gave the government three weeks and one week has passed; they are left with two weeks.”

Soldiers Withdraw From Checkpoints In Ondo, Residents Fear Criminal Invasion

The peace currently being enjoyed in Ondo State appears to be threatened following the withdrawal of soldiers from various checkpoints across the state.

The soldiers from the 32 Artillery Brigade were said to have returned to the barracks.

The reason for their action is yet to be ascertained as of press time.

The absence of the soldiers was noticed across the interstate boundaries as well as at checkpoints along Ago-Ajayi, Owo-Ikare Junction, Owen, Ajue, Igbara-Oke and Uso-Owo.

No official confirmation has been issued in this regard as the brigade is yet to react to the development.

However, residents, as well as motorists, have begun to express fear over the sudden disappearance of the soldiers from the checkpoints.

Residents say the peace in the state might be eroded and criminal activities on the highway may resume if bandits and gunmen learn that security operatives are no longer on guard.

Big Brother Naija season six winner, Whitemoney, has appealed to the organizers of the reality show nor to allow married people to participate in the show, IgbereTV reports.

He said this in a recent interview with Media Room Hub. Whitemoney also made reference to his co-stars, Boma and Tega’s entanglement on the show to explain the reason behind his opinion.

He noted that married people are also regular human beings and not all of them are strong enough to ignore some distractions. According to him, Tega is still suffering from her situation with Boma on the show.

In his words:

“Big Brother, you know I love you so much, you made me a star, anything I asked, you always do for me, if you could do just one thing for me. Scrap out married people from the show, for the sake of the platform.

A lot of people said this year edition taught them a lot things. Married people are humans, not all of them have the strong zeal to wade up distraction. For instance, Tega is still suffering from her last experience in the show, same thing with Boma. The fans are still dragging them till today”.

The Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a construction firm, Olotu Holdings Limited for the construction of 9,343 bed-space capacity students’ hostel.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Construction firm, Mr. Benjamin Adeniyi Ayodele expressed appreciation to the Management for the opportunity given to the firm to partner with EKSU. He explained that the company was projecting the provision of hostel accommodation that would take care of about 10,000 students on campus.

Mr. Benjamin Adeniyi assured the Management of Ekiti State University that all arrangements for movement to the project site were in top gear as everything was set in terms of funding and manpower.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun in his remarks, thanked the Chairman of the firm for trusting Ekiti State University with such a huge investment.

Prof Olanipekun told the investor to be rest assured that the resources being invested into the project would never be a regret as the University would not only be faithful to the terms of the agreement, but also, create an enabling environment for the smooth execution of the project.

The Vice Chancellor described the project as a good development as it would provide a suitable accommodation for a reasonable number of students, thus, making the goal of making the institution a fully residential one a reality.

Prof Olanipekun, however, advised the investor on the need to interact with the Directorates of Physical Planning and Procurement of the university for strict adherence to specifications.

The Vice Chancellor further advised the firm not to waste time in its preparation to move to the project site in order to meet up with the target for the completion of the project. He also advised that the construction could go in phases.

Two other investors (Eliezer Investment and Covenantedge Revert Services) had earlier signed Memoranda of Understanding with the university on the provision of accommodation for both staff and students of the university.

The recent event will no doubt, complement the earlier efforts.

FG Extends NIN-SIM Verification Deadline Till End Of The Year

Stakeholders Applaud the NIN-SIM Verification Exercise as FG Urges Citizens and Legal Residents to Enrol Before the End of the Year

The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) has conveyed the approval of the Federal Government to extend of the deadline for the National Identity Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification. Citizens and legal residents are urged to complete the process before the end of the year 2021.

The decision to extend the deadline was made further to appeals by the Mobile Network Operators and other industry stakeholders, soliciting for a further extension to ensure better compliance with government’s directive and to avoid widening the digital divide. The extension would also provide the enabling environment for the registration of Nigerians in remote areas, diaspora, schools, hospitals, worship centres, as well as foreigners, diplomatic missions, those in other areas that were hitherto unreachable, and increase enrolments in countries with a significant number of Nigerians.

The review of the progress of the exercise indicated that over 66 million unique National Identity Numbers (NIN) have been issued- an indication of progress achieved in the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage. However, a significant part of the populace is yet to be registered into the National Identity Database (NIDB), which may be due to some challenges which the Federal Government has looked into and has made efforts to alleviate, hence the need to extend the deadline.

As of October 30, 2021, there were over 9,500 enrolment systems and over 8,000 NIN enrolment centres within and outside the country- this has significantly eased the NIN enrolment process and subsequent linkage of NIN to SIM. The NIN-SIM verification process is supporting the Government’s drive to develop Nigeria’s digital economy, strengthen our ability to protect our cyberspace and support the security agencies.

The administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has graciously approved the extension to accommodate the yearnings of the populace and make it easier for its citizens within and outside the country, and legal residents to obtain the NIN and link it with their SIM. The Federal Government will ensure that all innocent, law abiding citizens and residents will not lose access to the their phone lines as long as they obtain and link their NIN.

Government will also continue to provide an enabling environment for investors in the telecommunications sector,

The unique 66 million NIN enrolments, with an average of 3 to 4 SIMs linked to the NIN, is a testament to the commitment and dedication of the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to ensure the success of the project. With the creation of additional NIN enrolment centres within and outside the country, and many more coming up, the remaining citizens and legal residents living in the country and the diaspora should be able to obtain their NINs and link them with their SIMs before the end of the year.

Consequently, the Honourable Minister enjoins Nigerians and legal residents to make use of the opportunity of the extension to enrol for their NINs and link with their SIMs. On behalf of the Honourable Minister, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, and the Director-General/CEO of NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, urge citizens and legal residents to take advantage of the window to complete the process of enrolment and verification before the the end of the year 2021.
