Anti-corruption: groups in South East Nigeria protest the role of EFCC

Four different groups which styled themselves as anti-corruption groups from the  South East region yesterday staged a peaceful rally in Enugu calling for  acceleration of trial of former governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu and his other colleagues that served during General Olusegun Obasanjo’s era.

The groups comprising of South East Youth congress, Igbo Students Leaders Forum,  Anti-corruption Network and  Ndigbo Against Corruption said “the peaceful rally was in support of the recent renewed anti-corruption war in the country. We are happy that  the EFCC  is now determined to banish corruption in the country.

We are however in particular calling on EFCC to accelerate the prosecution of the former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu who has a case still pending in the agency and who has been strutting about freely in the society.

“We are also reminding the EFCC  that the trial of some political office holders that served during the Obasanjo era has remained unduly delayed over the years thereby laying credence to the insinuations from some quarters that the agency might be selective on its actions.

“Therefore, we call on the EFCC  to  accelerate the cases of Saminu Turaki, Joshua Dariye, Lucky Igbinedion and other ex governors and political office holders whose cases have been dormant at the EFCC.”

They marched through the streets around the Independence Layout  axis where the EFCC  office is located.
